MARCELLA B. SHANNON

Marcella “Marcy” B. Shannon passed away on Friday morning, August 11, 2023, after a long battle with chronic health issues. Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Marcella (nee Miller) and James Shannon, she prioritized family from a young age by being a constant source of love and support to her seven siblings: Shirley, James (Beatrice), Patrick (deceased), Ronald, Richard (Debbie-deceased), Timothy (deceased) and Kevin (Kevin Gilliam). Marcy graduated from Holy Name High School in 1966, worked for over 30 years as a pharmacy technician and served as a union steward for Local 880. Her biggest source of pride was being a loving mother to Melissa Vlasak (Jason Bradley), Frank Vlasak (deceased) and Katy Mansfield (John Rajic) and cherished grandmother to Joseph Vlasak, Jack Bradley and Fiona Rajic. She was loved by her nephew, great nieces, 38 cousins and many friends.

In addition to her beloved family, she had passion for volunteering and fundraising for churches and schools. Marcy generously donated her time, gifts, home baked goodies and leadership to Holy Name Church and High School, including the Alumni Auctions, picnics and golf outings, as well as Jesus and Mary School and Menlo Park Academy. She was also active at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Her interest in local politics was evident in her contributions to the Ward 12 Democratic Club, as a Deputy Ward 12 Leader, the Cleveland Democratic Party and the Central and Executive Committees. She inspired inclusivity and strongly believed in community building as shown through her work with offering free bicycle helmets to local youths, The Slavic Village Neighborhood Summit, as a member of the Division of Police 4th District Community Relations Committee, the Warner Turney Neighborhood Association, Absolute House, the Fullerton Block Club, a 4-H leader, the Garden Club with the Union Ave Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, the South East Kiwanis Club, the E. 63rd St. Block Club, Iron Ward Music Festival and the Ward 12 Holiday Bash.

When she wasn’t busy with her family and volunteer efforts, she loved to visit museums, ballets, and enjoying the movies with her grandsons. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and rarely missed the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Cleveland.

A mass will be held in her honor on Saturday August, 19, 2023 at 2 P.M. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church 3385 E. 55 St. Cleveland, OH 44127.

A celebration of her life will be held immediately following at Sokol’s (Bohemian Hall) 4939 Broadway Ave. Cleveland, OH 44127. Interment plans are being finalized.
